Master
Overview: In this role, the master has overall responsibility for the safe operation of his/her vessel in accordance with flag state laws and international regulations. He has overall command of the ship her safety, security, her crew, cargo and the environment. The master is to execute his/her duties in compliance with relevant national and international regulations and in compliance with the vessel management system.
Key tasks & responsibilities and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS).
- Overall command of the ship
- Safeguarding the owner’s and company interests at all times
- Maintenance of the ship’s and crew certification required for trading
- Communication with the owners, the Company, the Charterers and any other party as required
- Maintenance of the ship and her equipment
- Ensuring that all crew receive familiarization training on embarking the vessel
- Ensuring that Emergency organization & Emergency parties responsibilities are known by each crewmember including training that maybe required aboard the vessel
- Safe navigation of the vessel as required by the Company navigation procedures and for ensuring that all navigation watch keepers are fully familiar with these procedures
- Ensuring that the crew is familiar with MOSH (marine occupational safety and health regulation) as promulgated by labor Canada
- Ensuring that the risk assessment procedures are adhered to onboard and, where necessary, office assistance is obtained to mitigate identified risks
- Ensuring compliance with the hours of work and rest regulations
- Providing medical care aboard the vessel
- Enforcing the Company Drug & Alcohol policy
- Determining the appropriate manning levels for the tasks at hand to ensure safety of operation for crew and ship
- Respect of all recognized good seafaring practices

Chief Engineer
Overview: Responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and repair of all machinery and electrical equipment onboard. Supervision of all engineering officers and engine room ratings and the monitoring of overtime. He is responsible for setting up and adhere to the operating budget for his department as well to abide by the purchasing procedures of the Company and the safeguarding of the owners and the Company’s interests at all times.

Responsible to the master for and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS).
- The Engine-Room department and the safety of the crew, machinery and the environment directly within his control
- Implementation of the Company policies and procedures concerning his department as enunciated in the SMS
- Ensuring that the Engine Room department personnel receive formal familiarization training on embarking the vessel via the designated officer onboard
- The onboard discipline, appraisal of all engine department personnel
- Safe and efficient operation of the vessel’s machinery and technical plant
- Monitoring the performance of the main propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery
- Accurate entry of all of all machinery parameters by the watch keepers /duty engineers in the engine-room log
- Accurate monitoring and control of the vessel’s fuel and lubricating oil consumption and the status of fuel, bunkers and lubricating oil quantity
- Resupply of fuel, bunker, lube oil and other fluids as appropriate
- Compliance with statutory and classification surveys requirements with regards to machinery and relevant spaces
- Reporting of any accident and/or damage to the vessel’s machinery or technical plant
- Assessment and mitigation of all identified risk onboard in cooperation with other members of the shipboard management team

Chief Officer
Overview: Head of the deck department, responsible for the safe and efficient planning & conduct of cargo and ballast handling operations. Member of the bridge team and officer of the watch.
Key tasks & responsibilities and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS) or requested by the Master.
The Chief Officer is responsible to the Master for:
- Acting as the Deck department team leader in an emergency / crisis situation response situation
- Maintaining the upkeep of the hull, deck fixtures, fittings, crew accommodation areas (including toilets, washrooms, galley/mess), forecastles Bosun’s storerooms etc.
- Administering the deck inventories exercising cost control, and ordering of goods as needed
- Maintaining an up to date record of deck maintenance
- Monitoring all situations which may result from an environmental pollution incident and conducting appropriate preventative measures
- Keeping a safe navigational watch as instructed by the Master
- Ensuring that all safety equipment is maintained in a good operational mode and regularly tested
- When nominated by the master as the ship safety officer ensure that the crew maintains safe working practices
- Acting as ship security officer along with the associated duties as per the ship security plan
- Taking charge of the mooring party
- Recording incidents and dangerous occurrences
- Ensuring that the crew wear their PPE and sponsor safe working practices at all times
- Responsible for the upkeep of the ship safety and training record book

Overview: Designated as the vessel’s Navigation Officer and Officer of the Watch for navigation and cargo operations. Ensuring that the bridge and navigational equipment is in good working order. Maintaining all navigation records in good order as required by the best practices guide and recognized navigation procedures.
Key tasks & responsibilities
- Ensuring that the charts corrections and the library of navigational and regulatory publications are kept up to date
- As navigation officer he/she is mandated to prepare the passage plans and submit them to the master for approval
- Keeping a cargo/port watch as instructed by the ships officer
- Taking charge of a mooring party
- Understudying the Chief Officer whenever suitable opportunities arise
- Any other task and duties as instructed by the Master or by the Chief Officer for cargo operationsCargo operations responsibilities and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS) or requested by the Chief Officer.

Third Officer
Overview: Designated officer for routine checking and maintenance of Lifesaving Appliances and Firefighting Equipment. Accurate and timely preparation of specific documentation as required for vessels’ port/Arrival- Departure.
Key tasks & responsibilities
- Maintaining lifesaving equipment, including vessel lifeboats, ensuring that the equipment is kept in a constant state of readiness according to SOLAS requirements
- Maintaining all firefighting appliances, including hoses, all breathing apparatus and extinguishers ensuring that such equipment is kept in a constant state of readiness according to SOLAS requirements
- Reporting to the Chief Officer any deficiencies in the lifesaving and firefighting equipment which may affect the vessel safe operations
- Maintaining Lights, Shapes, Flags Halyards and Sound signaling apparatus
- Keeping a safe navigational watch, as instructed by the master
- Taking charge of a mooring party
- Keeping a cargo /port watch, as instructed by the Chief Officer

Second Engineer
Overview: Member of the Shipboard management team. Ensuring that the engine room operations are conducted as per the requirements of the technical procedures and other applicable procedures as enunciated in the SMS. In charge of the implementation of safe working practices within the engine department. This engineer deputizes for the Chief Engineer in the event of his absence, accident or illness. In such case a log book entry must be made.

The 2nd Engineer is responsible to the Chief Engineer for and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS) or requested by the Chief Engineer.
- Preparation of the of the engine room plant for sea
- Effective and efficient operation of the day to day operations of the engine-room plants
- Organization and supervision of the Engine-Room watch keepers/UMS duty engineers
- Organization and supervision of the engine room ratings and other engine room staff
- Efficient operation of all emergency equipment, testing of same including the equipment outside of the machinery spaces such as: Emergency Generator, Emergency fire pump, Lifeboat engine, Fire Flaps, Emergency stops, fuel tanks valves trips
- Implementation of the MOHS regulation
- Taking all necessary steps to ensure protection of the environment.
- General maintenance of the machinery spaces and its equipment

Overview: The maintenance of all electrical and electronic equipment. Providing assistance to the chief officer for specific cargo equipment.
Key tasks & responsibilities
The electrical engineer is responsible to the chief engineer for and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the Company Safety Management System (SMS) or requested by the chief engineer.
- Maintaining the vessel’s electrical and electronic equipment
- UMs test schedules, alarm tests etc
- Assisting during maintenance as required over and above electrical equipment maintenance
- Providing support for the safe and efficient running of electrical equipment during cargo operations
- First level maintenance of communications, radio and navigation equipment
- Adopting safe working practices at all times

The MA is responsible to the second engineer for and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the Company cSafety Management System (SMS) or requested by the chief engineer.
- Assisting in the maintenance of all machinery, technical equipment, plant, etc as instructed by an engineer officer
- General cleaning and Housekeeping duties
- Undertaking any other duties as instructed by the chief engineer or the 2nd engineer
- Adopting safe working practices at all times

Deck Engineer
Overview: Assisting in the planning and execution of all cargo related operations such as loading, discharging, tank cleaning, inerting, gas freeing, performing cargo related duties as required for the vessel type and trade
Key tasks & responsibilities
The Pumpman is responsible to the chief officer for and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS) or requested by the Chief Officer or Chief Engineer.
- Assisting the duty officer/surveyor with temperatures/Ullage readings and cargo sampling as ordered by the chief officer
- Efficient execution of loading / discharging operations in cooperation with the duty officer
- Inspecting, maintaining, cleaning the pump-room and reporting of deficiencies
- Ensuring all cargo related equipment (valves, pipes, tanks, hoses, etc) is properly marked for an easy identification
- Changing of fittings, packing, flanges, in accordance with instructions
- Keeping all tools, equipment, spares inventory in sufficient quantity at all times, Pumpman store in good order
- Complying with the lubrication and maintenance schedule of all cargo equipment & deck machinery as applicable

Overview: Supervising the deck ratings. Responsible for the planning of the deck maintenance and the preparation of the vessel for sea, confined waters passage, anchoring and docking operations.
Key tasks & responsibilities
The Bosun is responsible to the Chief Officer and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the Company Safety Management System (SMS) or requested by the Chief Officer.
- Assisting in the planning and execution of maintenance and operational work tasks
- Instructing Able Seamen and Ordinary seamen in accordance with Company safety policy and quality standards
- Effectively performing assigned tasks in conformance with safe work procedures and in accordance with instructions given by the supervising officer.
- Ensuring that no work involving entry into confined spaces, hot work, working aloft, is undertaken without the prior approval of the Chief Officer.
- Ensuring that, when the work mentioned above is conducted, proper surveillance is in place at all times, risks and hazards have been evaluated and the working environment is secured.
- During cargo operations, responsible to the officer of the watch for maintaining the vessel securely moored and ensuring that work is conducted safely.
- Assisting in cargo operations (preparation of the cargo spaces for the next loading etc)

Overview: Supervising the stewardship department. The Chief Steward directs, instructs, and assigns personnel performing such functions as preparing and serving meals. The Chief Steward oversees the cleanliness of the officers’ quarters and steward department areas. The Chief Steward may also requisition or purchase stores and equipment.
Key tasks & responsibilities
Reports to the master for and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS) or instructed by the master.
- In charge of the stewardship department
- Ensuring that the staff meets the standard of cleanliness and sanitation required of a catering department
- Inspects work areas such as galley, storerooms, etc
- Ensuring that the stewardship staff has the proper training
- Ensuring a proper follow up on the appraisals of the employee in his department
- Ensuring the efficiency of his department and prevent waste
- Ensuring control of the inventories related to his department
- Ensuring that proper records are kept
- Ensuring that the stewardship staff is instructed on and apply the MOHS regulations

Overview: In charge of the galley. As such the chief cook prepares the food for the crew. The chief Cook must ensure that the galley is kept in a constant state of cleanliness and that food hygiene respects the norms set by the industry and the national regulations
Key tasks & responsibilities
The chief cook is responsible to the Camp Boss and any other duties and responsibilities as enunciated in the company Safety Management System (SMS) or instructed by the Chief Steward or the Master.
- Ensuring that the galley is operated in a safe and efficient manner
- Ensuring the timing and sequence of operations to serve the meals in a timely manner
- Ensuring that the galley and galley equipment is kept in a constant state of cleanliness and sanitation.
- Ensuring that the perishables are stored at the appropriate temperatures and in accordance with industry and regulatory standards
- Ensuring that the menus are properly varied and meet the recognized standards for well balance meals
- Ensuring that the principles of <> cooking are respected
- Ensuring that the food stock is properly rotated when new provisions are ordered

When the galley does not provide a self -served service the second cook attends to the officers’ mess when the food is served.

- Ensuring that the chief cook has the assistance needed
- Ensuring that the galley and galley equipment is kept in a constant state of cleanliness and sanitation

- Possess the required certification for the position held as per the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) and the Manila 2010 amendments for a vessel operating in unlimited waters
- Possess a “designated security duties” certificate as per STCW regulation A-VI/6
- Obtain and hold an Enhanced Reliability security clearance. It is imperative to hold such security clearance as required by the Provision of Services contract between Federal Fleet Services and Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, represented by the Minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada
